A book of 2 halves so to speak*

The 1st half of the book was excellent, Pratchett's strongest showing since Going Postal (though not of the class of the sublime The Truth). The new characters, especiallt Nutt, were interesting and more importantly funny. Indeed I had a little chortle to myself whilst reading on the bus a few times. All in all a strong start.

The 2nd half however I found tailed off considerably, it wasn't bad as such, but didn't live up to the expectations set. Once the *reveal* (if you can call something so obvious and signposted as such) was done and we got into the moral of the story, it just lost it's punch. And i'm not entirely sure what the moral of the story was, surely we've been over this same ground again and again with dwarves, trolls, vampires, zombies, a.n.other race...did we need to play it out once more? Or was I missing some hidden meaning?

I didn't see the reveal, as you call it, coming at all. I knew it must be something, but I wasn't able to pinpoint it. I thought it rather amusing that that was what it was, as it fits with the new obsession with Tolkien. I think the new in it as well is that this is not someone "natural", as it were, but someone "made". Which I suppose was partially done with the gholems, but the essential facts there was that they were controllable.

I agree there was rather a lot of moral, but I have learnt to forgive Pratchett that.

So yes, a good book, but one let down at the end by it's own expectations.

*Pun very much intended
