The movie was not faithful to the books in any meaningful way. *NM*

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was not "always evolving". That's like saying Doctor Zhivago or Gone With the Wind were always evolving simply because they were made into movies. It's the nature of any popular book to be made into TV and/or movie versions. Furthermore, having seen the TV series and movie for Hitchhiker's Guide I can say that both followed the book faithfully and didn't "evolve" at all.
It's this sort of rampant commercialization that destroys good books. Next I expect we'll hear that the Tolkien estate has authorized "The New Lord of the Rings - Sauron's Revenge".

You said "classic novel". Science fiction doesn't generally meet that standard.
