The movie has to answer questions quickly, so it invents 'sound' technology etc to explain why the arteides and fremen may be a threat to sardukar. Which is fine, but is absolutely unrealted to the novel.
The book explores themes around religion, human conditioning, empire building over hundreds of years. And as a result makes the movie make sense. I too watched the movie before i read the book, and I know that was the right decision. I liked the movie, i loved the book.
I could go on about how good the book was, but instead i will simply say - if you want the movie to finally make sense, read the book.

Death to the Regressives of the GOP and the TeaParty. No mercy for Conservatives. Burn them all at the stake for the hateful satanists they are.
Why should I read "Dune"?

Dune is pretty clearly inspired by Islam and the Arab world.

How very clever and relevant to the discussion of whether or not the OP should read Dune!
