I go to see Star Wars movies and love them because they're mindless entertainment. I read Warhammer 40k novels and tolerate them because they're mindless entertainment. But I think it's important to know what you're getting into. Sometimes I want something with a bit more substance.
"Wake the night guard adn tell them to put on their armor" says one of the world's greatest generals, of his private army, during a night operation.
I will defend the value of the aforementioned mindless properties to the death, and I have written glowing reviews on this very site of Expendables & Fast & Furious movies, as well as a slightly positive review of Battleship for crap's sake. But I'm not going to remotely defend the nonsense I quoted from "The Gathering Storm", or having a character previously established as an anatomically savvy country girl compare the appearance of a walnut to a small animal's brain. That comparison would only occur to someone whose sole experience of brains is sterile high school bio textbook diagrams. Anyone who has actually seen a brain (or used one to write a novel) knows they look more like tuna salad.
