I just got through this book not too long ago. It was...well, it was pretty amazing. Lawrence pretty much took took the quintessential villain and dropped you straight into his head. It discusses the (very) dark side of a story. What makes the murderous antagonist tick? What drives him? How could he live with himself killing, raping, stealing? It's immersive and disturbing and interesting all at the same time and I couldn't put the book down. The writing itself was phenomenal. It has such a depth to it.

I read mainly fantasy: Robert Jordan, Sanderson, Martin, blah blah blah, big name authors. In my opinion, only Sanderson's depth of characters in the Stormlight Archive have compared to Jorg Ancrath in Prince of Thorns. He's wretched and merciless and all the while, you can't help but sympathize with him. But only for a time before he goes and commits another heinous act.

All in all, it was quite a read. I've picked up King of Thorns and Emperor of Thorns to read next. My brother, who's read all 3, said he had to put King of Thorns down for a time because of a particularly disturbing scene. We'll see how this one turns out.
