I'm reading a Spanish novel called "El Corazon Helado" (The Frozen Heart - it should be widely available in translation), by Almudena Grandes. Won some awards in Spain, and so far (about a third of the way in, but it's a massive book) it's definitely a great read, about a man in his forties in contemporary Spain who, after his father's funeral, starts to discover that there was much more to his father's life at the time of the Spanish Civil War and just after than he ever knew.
Larry, if you haven't read her yet, you should. Those among us (looking at you, Tom) who think Franco was somehow a great man may violently disagree with the politics of Grandes' characters - I shouldn't think that would ruin the novel entirely, though.
