Also, is this issue isolated in Mistborn #1 or repeated many times?

This particular issue? No idea. But there are a number of similar minor issues. None of them are egregious, none of them are gamebreakers for me. Hell, I own all of his novels in hardcover and would recommend them to anyone. But little things like this do add up and I think all authors should be encouraged to continually improve their writing weaknesses regardless of their success or how hard people try to defend them despite those weaknesses. Sanderson is one of the most popular fantasy writers in the world, is fantastic at promotion, and is really very good at the things he does well, so I hardly think he needs defending. And Sanderson's style has improved since Mistborn. But that doesn't mean he should stop trying, and it doesn't mean there aren't still weaknesses.

Right, but we've already established you don't really care about writing. - 27/05/2014 04:05:03 PM 1057 Views
Honestly, what % of readers do you think would notice this "problem"? - 27/05/2014 04:28:25 PM 1186 Views

Promising opening paragraph, yes, but... - 26/05/2014 10:55:16 PM 952 Views
I think those shifts are part of the character, not something unintentional - 27/05/2014 06:08:44 AM 964 Views
So bad prose is okay if it is intentional? *NM* - 27/05/2014 03:54:34 PM 469 Views
Okay, I do of course miss the perspective of what comes after. - 27/05/2014 06:29:33 PM 864 Views
I proudly claim the title of literary snob, and will provide you with a quick, unscientific example. - 26/05/2014 08:15:04 PM 1063 Views

Huh. Lana Del Rey quotes Nabokov... I had not made that connection. - 26/05/2014 11:17:47 PM 1174 Views
That quote from Lolita sounds like it is from a romance novel with Fabio on the cover. - 27/05/2014 03:40:37 AM 972 Views
