Also Shakespeare (from a writing style perspective, not from impact or character wealth); Mieville and Gaiman also spring to mind.

Sure, I like some of what he wrote, I understand his impact on English culture and the English language and can respect both, but I can't see reading everything the man ever wrote. I don't get people who have everything he wrote and actually sit and read it all. It isn't THAT good.

But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
