- The story being told at face value.
And
- A hidden story - that what we are reading is a memory of child's imaginative attemp to understand things that he can not understand - death, sex, abuse.
I kind of wish the end had been more ambiguous - to make it more up to the reader if the events are real or imagined (in universe).
