A long time ago I read a story that impressed me very much,. Now those memories are faded and I wonder if anyone can identify that story, either name or author? The main line of the story: a man finds an abandoned cottage in an isolated location and a note left by the former occupant. The note tells of intelligent beasts that are prowling and hunting him, and then the note ends .... and he gets a fleeting glance of a creature out the window and realizes he is now the hunted.
I could have sworn it was written by James Herbert, but maybe not.
