Currently reading John Thavis' just-published The Vatican Diaries and he has a short chapter on Reginald Foster, who some might consider to be the founder of the "Living Language" method of teaching Latin. This quote is priceless:
"Latin is not difficult, friends. It's not reserved for experts. My God, every prostitute in ancient Rome spoke Latin," he reminded anyone within earshot.
Later in the chapter, it is revealed that:
"I'm a naturalist, I'm a nudist. I like to say Mass in the nude, too. If God doesn't like that, sorry."
Very illuminating book so far about the Vatican and its various characters.

Judging by the graffiti I've seen, they didn't speak it particularly well.

Not really, other than a few allusions such as one made in Catullus' poem #84. *NM*
