The book was a real let down for me, especially the second half, like you said. I'd argue that it was well written, and certainly didn't fall prey to many of the cliches of the genre, but at the same time it was just a little too gritty and dark.
In my review, I called it "Hemingway Fantasy" since it seemed to be horribly depressing and involve an unhealthy amount of alcohol in the second half of the book.
Overall, a good book, but I'm not going to read a sequel if it ever comes about.
