And somehow I managed to finish the whole thing. I thought it was pretty horrible. Terrible pacing, fantasy cliches abound, shallow one-dimensional characters . . . I just couldn't bring myself to suffer through the movie or the following books in the series.
Of course, I was writing stuff this bad when I was 16, too. I just didn't have the opportunity to get it published.

People hailed Paolini as a genius or whatever because he was so young when it was written. Well, it was only published because his parents own the company! It's got nothing to do with the quality of the book at all. I almost had an apoplexy once when I heard someone refer to him as "the next Tolkien."
But publishers and reviews spout that kind of dribble all the time to sell books and movies. It's so lame.
this is true.
although, I kinda hate it when they refer to *anyone* as tolkien or compare books to LOTR...it's the ultimate fantasy review sin in my opinion.
(that and comparing them to Harry Potter )
