Lots of references to squirrels in the Malazan stories:
MoI: Mage, when opening his warren, always draws enraged ground squirrels.
RG: A few references to squirrels, in terms of activity or the actual animal.
The Lees of Laughter's End: Reference to a battle with an undead squirrel.
I knew there had to be a reason why I liked Erikson's fiction more than Martin's. It's simple, now: Erikson has the squirrels attacking and being awesome, while Martin seems to think they are just Direwolf bait
