In case my total geekhood were in doubt, I remember that in the Dragonlance world, upon reaching fifth level a magic-user (or mage, or wizard, as the later iterations of the game called them, though in First Edition it was strictly used for 11th level or higher magic-users) had to enter one of the three orders: the white (good) wizards, the red (neutral) wizards or the black (evil) wizards. Raistlin was a red wizard (and cursed in his test at the Tower of High Sorcery) but then he became a black wizard instead, which is a great way to openly tell even the densest of readers that he was EVIL rather than NEUTRAL.
Of course, because evil wizards couldn't cast invocation/evocation spells according to the Dragonlance Handbook, he couldn't cast the cool spells anymore, like fireball or lightning bolt. It really seemed silly to me.

That is how I knew so little about it; not having any of the books bought for me and certainly not the game. I only knew of two classmates that played it, but not until I was a senior in high school and even then, I knew nothing other than it was some fantasy game.
So all I've really known about D&D is second-hand until this past week
