The first six are more or less famous... and then three of the last four I've never even heard of?

Of those first six, I've only read 1984 and Jonathan Strange (which I find a bizarre inclusion on the list anyway, being a recent book, fairly entertaining and not really as deep as the other books on the list, as far as I can tell without having read most of them anyway). Flush with my success with Mason & Dixon, however, I might give Gravity's Rainbow a shot (and then fail miserably to finish it, like as not, but oh well). Cryptonomicon, Dune and, to a far lesser degree, Foundation do rank among the books I intend to read at some point. Maybe Dhalgren, and those three I'd never heard of seem like they might be interesting too...

I hear you on the Pynchon, but it does get easier after a few tries.

I read 1984 twice, and tried to get into Dune on 3 occasions before vomiting.

I didn't realize Jonathan Strange was a Sci-fi book... Seemed more fantasy-ish to me
