- L'Ecume des jours, by Boris Vian
The French director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... and the rather awful Green Hornet), aka the master of lo-fi whimsical VFX is currently shooting a pretty big budgeted (for France) adaptation of L'Écume des Jours with Audrey Tautou (Amélie) as Chloé and Romain Duris as Colin, and a very solid secondary cast incl. Philippe Torreton as Jean-Sol Partre, and Omar Sy as Nicolas.
The trailer is expected by late fall. The movie is set for a 2013 release. For the US/UK release, they're opting for the friendlier Indigo Mood title (after one of the pianocktail's drinks) .
There's a lot of excitement (and some big apprehensions) around the movie. Vian is reputed unadaptable, even if it's hard to think of any director better suited to adapt succesfully Vian's universe than Gondry. The two previous attempts to adapt L'Écume des Jours have failed miserably with the transition between the light whimsical love story and the oppressing but poetic tragedy. It looks well set to be at least a visual feast for Vian's fans. The few sets and props that were shown are very promising, notably the oh-so-Vian-like nonsensical cars (modernized look - Gondry has opted for mixing up stuff from many eras for a unique retro-futuristic production design rather than go with a pure whimsical 1940s retro look):

My list of French literature I've read is extremely short, so, um, Racine? Yourcenar?

And if you were to read the Spanish versions, there are two well-known plays

Okay, I looked at Don Carlos. I see no resemblance to Don Juan.

I mentioned it because Don Juan appears in it, but is not the star of it

I have the two-volume anthology of French poetry from Pléiade (book series, not the poet group).

You could read the world's first Sci-Fi novel, Lucian of Samosata's Ἀληθῆ διηγήματα.

Having read more about that, I'm tempted to say genre fiction has always been bad.
