The Runelords is a bit tough to chew at points, and the end of the second book traumatized me just a tad bit it took me a while to pick up 3. (Shudders in memory of the ending of that)
The Belgariad, though, is simple, and doesn't take itself to seriously. Its a quick read, and fun. Has the typical cookie cutter types, but they're written pretty well, and are worth the time. It would be something I'd have a younger reader start on...before getting to more heavy works.

The past is just that, the past. You can only truly live by looking to the future!
