I just saw Stalker a few days ago, and I was told it is inspired by one small part of a novel called Roadside Picnic (Пикник на обочине) by the Strugatsky brothers. What I know of the plot sounds very interesting.
I hear there is also a book based on Tarkovsky's film, called Zona, which is also supposed to be quite good. I fully intend to read both. But I wanted to mention it here to see if one of you were familiar with the books.

It was a short (I want to say around 170-180 pages in the paperback edition I had – Gollancz SF Masterworks), but not quick read. There's a lot happening and it behooves the reader to pay very close attention. That being said, I thought it was an excellent novel, even if I never quite got around to writing that review that I intended to do.
Illusions fall like the husk of a fruit, one after another, and the fruit is experience. - Narrator, Sylvie

yes, I wouldn't call Stalker an expansion. More of a distillation. *NM*
