Not sure which elites you are referring to.

The painting is of some importance to Art historians for sure, because it's a landmark in technique and aesthetics. The painting (that DaVinci gave to François 1er) was also of great influence during the French Renaissance. It remains a Da Vinci so like all his works scholars have also long been interested in its history, and it is one of the first portraits to have used perspective and a "live" background (thus its influence on the renaissance painters).

That's nothing to do with its fame, though. That all began with its theft and recovery in the early 20th century. It's only with that and after that that it became world-famous, attracting way too much attention from non specialist and turning in the public's eye into this greatest of all masterpieces, which is way exagerated, especially since the size of the painting make it far from impressive in a museum. The art elites have longed mocked the popular obsession with the Mona Lisa.
