I have nothing really to add. The book frightened me (I was about 14 or 15 when I read it and didn't sleep that night). From what I remember of it the book portrayed Jack's descent into madness quite convincingly, enough to freak me out. We won't talk about the atrocious movie made with Jack Nicholson.
I read the book once before, many years ago, and then sometime in the intervening years I saw the movie. I remember thinking that there were a lot of differences. I don't remember Nicholson's performance very well though, except for when he really got to chew the scenery at the end. I don't remember what I thought of the movie as a whole.
But yes, Jack's descent into madness was quite well done in the book.
