It is the second book of the Wraeththu histories, and I enjoyed it. I would only recommend it for those that have read and enjoyed the original Wraeththu book. I know some readers are put off by the sexuality in these books.
It further expands on the evolution of humans into a hermaphroditic race. They are discovering new psychic abilities and growing as a culture. This particular book takes a turn into a storyline involving otherworldly creatures. Angels, demons, and gods roughly but I won't give away more than that. There are a few returning characters from the original book, which added a touch of nostalgia. I'll have to go back and reread Wraeththu now.

I was quite surprised at the quality of the 2nd Wraeththu trilogy. Shades of Time & Memory is more like a sequel, it fills in a lot of gaps in the original trilogy. But the next two books take off in a slightly different direction, more epic - exploring the nature & the mysteries of the world.
