I know it's a 2000 year old institution that's made a lot of missteps along the way, but is the Catholic Church really responsible for the subversion of the entire world?
I'll admit, Pullman's philosophy put me a bit on the defensive to begin with, but I wasn't that impressed with the more superficial elements of the story either.
I would recommend these books for a younger audience though. Just the fact that it tackles the issues that it does would make it a good read, particularly in a group/classroom setting.

i read that years ago... i loved it. cried for like an hour or so after i finished the series.
