Well. To give you an idea of where I'm at, I wasn't even entirely aware that there were distinct Empire and Republic periods. But given a choice, the Empire period sounds more interesting. But that doesn't mean I would be necessarily uninterested in the other, if it were a part of the overall history.
The Empire was founded at the conclusion of the Civil Wars by Julius Caeser's nephew, Octavian (who renamed himself Augustus).
From the founding of Rome in the 8th Century BC to the fall of Constantinople in 1453 stretches more than 2000 years, so there's a lot to cover.
For example: I'm not the most knowledgeable person on the subject here, but in my mind there are several eras that it can be broken down into.Kingdom / Early Republic
Late Republic / Civil Wars
Early Empire
Late Empire / Western decline
Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire has its own segments, but people are generally more interested in the West so I didn't bother differentiating here. Perhaps worthy of note is that the Byzantine Empire may be better thought of as a Greek empire rather than a Latin one despite carrying on "Roman civilization" long after Rome itself had fallen into ruin.
