I just finished Book 3: Grave Peril. It was good, and I think I'm gonna continue reading the series. I'm posting to just discuss the series so far, so no big spoilers after book 3, please.
Harry is a great protagonist, and Butcher's first person POV is generally well-executed. While Harry is predictably chivalrous in almost any circumstance, I never tire of his "I'm gonna do the right thing" motif. While most authors make such a character seem boring, Butcher puts his wizard into such interesting situations that Harry's inevitable decision to be the good guy always has some pretty serious consequences.
The only beef I can say I've had so far are the rather predictable plot structures. Each of the books follows the exact same format. Crazy client shows up, new killings start happening, Harry bangs his head against the wall for a few chapters and then figures it all out, usually at a moment of extreme terror. He then busts out some crazy magic and kicks ass for a few more chapters. Maybe he gets laid. THE END.
That being said, the diverse supporting characters are fun. Butcher's use of magic is always interesting, and he tends to keep the pages turning.
Just picked up book 4 at the library. Gonna start it tonight. Anyone wanna discuss the series in general? I'm just getting started, but I don't mind minor spoilers.
