You sum up pretty much what irritates and sickens me about the current model, including the insidiousness of how things operate on many levels with many related media. I thankfully don't have to play ball with them and while that means purchasing the books that do interest me, it also means my role in book discussions changes from a quasi-book promoter of the new and shiny to a curator of works that may be languishing out of the public eye.
