I have to admit that the slowbuild is putting me off. I like Brandon's writing overall, but for me this is reading like one giant exposition, which I guess it is. Still, I wish it was a little faster paced.
It starts to pick up around the two-thirds mark, and the final hundred pages are where it really takes off and sets up the rest of the series. It's possible that the slow buildup is necessary for the impact of the finale and all its revelations.
If you aren't convinced after the ending, then fair game, but chances are good that it will get you excited for more.
