I've heard that it's really good if you can power through the first book. I'm about halfway through the first book, and my head is spinning from terms/places/things that aren't being explained. Opinions on if I ought to hang in there?
I am just about to finish the first book myself. I like it, though I know exactly what your talking about. What is with all the different Warrens? Are they different gods paths/worlds where the mages and witches and alchemists and seers all draw their own different types of power? They also seem to travel through these like shortcuts.
Its all a bit confusing because as so many have stated the author simply drops the reader right into the story without much explanation of who, what, when, or why. The world also seems to have a lot of baggage from the past as well which as an author must be nice because he doesn't even bother explaining much expositionally at all. I just had to hang on and push through to try and learn more from the different characters as the story progressed.
I will finish the book tonight and plan on reading the next book soon after. I might just push through this series and see how long it lasts me. It might just get me through until the last WOT book is due!
I give it a 4/5 rating. In my opinion I am looking forward to reading more.
Is the Malazan series worth it?

I feel like there are much better, tighter, more rewarding series out there. *NM*

Yes. Doesn't entirely live up to its potential imho, but the good outweighs the bad. *NM*

I got stuck in the middle of the 2nd book (when they are in a cave), so it's a no for me. *NM*

No, because of badly written characters and illogical power rankings...and a chaotic plot...
