The first suggestion has a bit of a romantic bent to it - it's not a big thing, as I usually avoid overly soppy plots and characters, but the books are well merry and fun with charming characters, good writing and a touch of the supernatural about them (until the third book, anyway). Deanna Raybourn's Silence in the Grave is (I think) the first of the series. Lots of fun! I strongly recommend. Murder mysteries in the spirit of Georgette Heyer, really.
Secondly, Diana Wynne Jones. Always a good comfort read. Always.
And Sherwood Smith's Crown Jewels, which (I think) is a duology that I have in one volume. Merry old fantasy romance - it's one of the few that I bought *because* of the romance and I'm not even a little ashamed.
If you do decide to read some kids/YA - Maureen Johnson and the Artemis Fowl books are a must! Also Margaret Mahy's The Changeover is excellent and Elizabeth Marie Pope's Perilous Gard is a favourite of mine. And omg Skulduggery Pleasant is amazing. People die horribly in it, but it's aimed at 9+ so it's far more cartoonish than anything. Also they're terribly funny. I love the series so much I have a Skulduggery Pleasant watch

There is actually a book called that: Reader's Block. But it is not fun and simple.

Wilde, Pratchett or something similarly humourous and witty usually helps me at that point. *NM*
