I will definitely check this out.
I rather enojyed his book "The Elegant Universe" about string-theory, easy to read for a layman and a fun read.
I'll assume this book is also of the same variety regarding his writing and explanations about detailed physics and theories involved.
Probably. There was a fair amount about String Theory in this book, actually. There were some sections where he would say stuff like "if you've read The Elegant Universe you can skim these bits." I don't think there would be a super large amount of overlap though; the first half of the book has very little to do with String Theory.

What timing. A coworker has been urging me to check out Greene for the last month or so.

Around the same time, I read a cool book about relativity by Bertrand Russell.
