Well, it was sort of foreshadowed (in hindsight).

seriously how much input did we have on Bloodraven prior to the Dunk and Egg novels and ASoS?
Same thing with the tale of Bale the Bard, which was relevant for Bale was a hint on Abel.
I could also make the same point of one of the sand snakes.

That's the problem I have with Aegon's story. THAT seems completely unanticipated or unforeshadowed, and not the way the introduction of other new elements has been handled.
As it is, there WERE details given and set up established to give Bloodraven a place in the SoI&F world, rather than make him a completely new character or additional element.
IIRC (and I may not) we did at least know before that the baby boy was unrecognizable, right? So that at least hinted at the possibility there. And we know Varys is like the puppetmaester of Westeros. This makes him and Illyrio more relevant if true.
If you are from Betelgeuse, please have one of your Earth friends read what I've written before you respond. Or try concentrating harder.

I don't think anyone's saying they know who he is.

Given that Martin doesn't seem to introduce characters like that, someone we know is more likely

But the point is, they were introduced at least, and not brought in from left field.

Also, telling your 10-year-old nephew that you're a monster now must be rough.
