Funnily enough, probably the most bothersome thing about his books to me is actually is magic system. He claims to base it on strict laws and yada yada, but those laws come down to:

"This magic creates, this magic destroys, Richard has both so he can do anything he wants whenever I need him to. Including (and yes, this is legitimately one of my biggest complaints) suddenly divining the recipe of an antidote to a poison he took, after spending the entire book searching for it.
