I loved most of the Three Musketeers (Louise de la Valliere being the sore spot there) ... it's not like I'm incapable of enjoying romantic period literature.

Three Musketeers is much more action packed though, and the highlights of all the books are the failures of their characters and eventual redemptions (I'm thinking how Constance gets poisoned and dies, followed by the execution of Milady) ...

I mean, I guess they 'failed' saving Lucy's life. From that point forward though they manage success in everything. There was never a suprise death/twist to ratchet up the tension and desperation ... (actually I was surprised by Reinfeld's death, that was an interesting part.)
