What does Gary Sueism mean?

A typical Mary Sue/Gary Sue character will; have a tragic upbringing, will be the smartest person around, will probably be very skilled or have special abilities, will be seen as very attractive to the opposite sex, will kick villains butts, no matter what obstacle the sue faces she/he will overcome it, in the unlikely situation a Sue has a set back the Sue will use the set back in a positive way. A Sue will generally reflect the idealized morality of the the author, whereas any antagonist will have characteristics that the author finds negative.

If you are a Star Trek fan, think Wesley Crusher, other examples would be Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker.

I didn't see him as dark in the first book, just desperate. For the most part he only resorted to violence when he was backed into a corner. He goes looking for trouble in the next book.

If I remember correctly he went looking for the individual that destroyed his lute.

I too thought the Adem were a bit trite, but there were some interesting passages. I particularly enjoyed the "man-mothers" segment, as well as seeing Kvothe bested repeatedly by a ten-year-old girl.

Perhaps the Adem were meant as comic relief, but if this was the case the attempt failed.
All good things come to those who wait.
