Mmm. Nate Send a noteboard - 14/06/2011 09:12:13 PM
you just blew my mind. I was starting to put a lot of those pieces together and may have figured it all out in a few weeks, but that was a very concise set of theories that all make sense.

I figured Denna was doing something magical with her hair and would hopefully help Kvothe with the mystery of the Yllish knot on the lockless box.

Yes, it does seem likely if she's capable of reading them.

I totally picked up that Kvothe was Meluan's aunt, it was pretty plainly stated. Why Kvothe himself didn't figure it out - I figured his memories of his parents were somehow impaired by the Chandrian.

The Chandrian & the Amyr - I have suspected Denna of being a member, or at least applicant, to the Amyr for some time. Her knowledge of lore, her access to stories about the Chandrian (her song about Lanre was from an entire volume on the matter, if I recall. No one else had access to that kind of information). The "bloody-handed Amyr" - I was hoping to learn what the Maer of Alveron knew about them, but we never got that far. I still think we've seen at least two of them - I always suspected Threpe and the Maer, only because the connection between them didn't seem all that plausible. It's made clear that the Maer is swamped with pining nobles who will do his bidding, but he takes the time to correspond with Threpe?

I too believe that Denna is an applicant to the Amyr, and that her patron is teaching her. I'm leaning toward Bredon being that patron. The Maer as an Amyr is an interesting thought, though it seems he wouldn't have been quite so superstitious about Kvothe's magic, nor so suspicious about Kvothe's knowledge when it came to the poison.

It's been speculated that there must be at least one Amyr at the University, pruning references to them from the Archives. Some believe that one Master, the one who runs the Archives and was friendly to Kvothe until he brought a candle inside, might be an Amyr. Was he angry that Kvothe brought a candle inside, or was he angry that Kvothe was found near the four-plate door?

I didn't get that the Ruh and the Adem were once the same. What clues were there as to that? I remember their origin story, but I saw nothing specific that pointed to the Ruh.

Edema and Adem sound very similar. The Adem said that they used to be a different people, a wandering people, until something changed (I can't recall ... did they take up swords?) and they were driven to their current land. Now they have all sorts of tabboos about music, which is a big part of Edema Ruh culture, and they still collect stories. I think there were other hints as well.

Kvothe changing his name makes the most sense, I think. right now his only motivation is to hide. Given the foreshadowing by Elodin towards the end of the book, it would seem that he probably did it not really understanding how damaging it could be.

Yeah, and with his name changed, his true name, he's literally a different person. With no special magical, physical, or musical talents. But I wonder if his old true name might be locked in his box, and telling his story is making him want to get it out. I believe it's been said that this trilogy will be followed by a second trilogy, potentially a trilogy that goes forward from the current present of the frame story, with Kvothe attempting to make up for whatever he did and make a difference in a world going to hell.

P.S. Fun fact: examining the foreign languages in the story reveals that Kote, Kvothe's innkeeper name, means "Disaster".
