I wasn't hooked until I hit around page 220 or so. There were parts I slogged through. Most around the start. I loved the Waterloo section and oddly found the sewer section very interesting. The last part totally pulled me in and I remember being awed at the last pages.
I will admit that he really could have used a good, firm editor.
Unfortunately, I read The Davinchi Code right after I read Les Miserables and it didn't stand a chance in comparison, so I never understood the people jumping on the Dan Brown bandwagon and they couldn't understand why I wasn't blown away by his book.
