back in the day. I found all the church stuff dull, and the revolution stuff exciting. I hardly even remember the romance. I was very young when I read it, though (probably too young -- since I don't remember much philosophising either). But I doubt I'll pick it up again any time soon. I was always more of a Dumas than a Hugo person.
