This post is largely due to thoughts generated from reading a few comments at this site in recent days. This is not meant to be a piss-measuring contest, but rather something that might encourage increased curiosity. Here goes:
1. Try to name up to five spec fic novels released in 2010-2011.
Adam Levin, The Instructions, Paul Kearney, Corvus, Adrian Tchaikovsky, The Scarab Path, N.K. Jemisin, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, Nnedi Okorafor, Who Fears Death.
2. What about up to five spec fic anthologies?
Kevin Brockmeier, Real Unreal: Best American Fantasy 3, Jonathan Strahan, Eclipse Four, George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, Warriors, Jonathan Strahan and Lou Anders, Swords & Dark Magic.
3. Can you identify without looking it up at least two of the Hugo nominees for Best Novel?
N.K. Jemisin, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, Ian McDonald, The Dervish House, Mira Grant, Feed, plus I'm forgetting the exact titles to the latest Lois Bujold and Connie Willis books.
4. What about the Nebula Award?
N.K. Jemisin, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, Nnedi Okorafor, Who Fears Death, Mary Robinette Kowal, Shades of Milk and Honey, plus titles from Willis and Jack McDevitt (I'm forgetting at least one, I think).
5. Do you feel that you are relatively well-informed on spec fic novels, especially the newer ones?
Yes.
6. Which authors (or genre categories) would you like to know more about?
Still exploring more "weird fiction," in preparation for the November release (at last) of The Weird anthology. Going to be reading some Jean Ray, Roland Topor, and more of the Decadents over the next six months.
7. Which spec fic-oriented blogs can you name and/or have visited?
I've visited a few dozen in my day. Empty Your Heart of Its Mortal Dream, Dazed Rambling, This Book and I Could Be Friends, and The Mumpsimus are some of my favorites.
