"Game of Thrones" in many ways is more similar to "The Tudors" than it is to high fantasy; the crossover appeal of violence, sex and politics enabled it to be marketed to a wide audience. This is why I think it was picked up.
I don't think "Wheel of Time" has that type of appeal; I'm hoping this becomes an animated miniseries more than a live action one.
