Eh, I've been doing a bunch of ebook evangelizing, so what's one more post.

Why not buy an e-reader? They're cheap, (a Kindle can be had for $114) and quickly pay for themselves in free books, especially if the hard copies cost $40. I know you say you prefer the physicality of a paper book, but you might be surprised at how your preferences change when you actually own a dedicated e-reader (which, for the record, is NOTHING like reading on a computer screen). I'm sure you've tried an e-reader from time to time before, but it takes quite a while to really get used to one. I didn't prefer my Sony Reader until I'd read at least three or four books on the thing.
Don't get me wrong, some people own an e-reader, and still prefer physical books.
...but some don't. A lot, actually. You might well find that you prefer the e-reader. Even if not, though, you'll undoubtedly find it to be a nice reading experience, and probably worth using for the occasional $40 book that you don't want to buy.
Anyway, just a thought.

I hate to come back to that now-ubiquitous point of contention. . .

Other than their locked-down format support, Kindles are great, yeah.
