My thought has always been to do it as a six-season ongoing series, each season comprising 20 episodes:
Season 1: Books 1-2
Season 2: Books 3-4
Season 3: Books 5-6
Season 4: Books 7-9
Season 5: Books 10-12
Season 6: Books 13-14
That gives you 10 episodes each to do the first six and last two books, then you squeeze the slow books down into fewer episodes, maybe eliminate pointless secondary characters and storylines. This still causes issues - Faile is still a Shaido prisoner for about a full season - but I think it's the best compromise between getting as much on screen as possible and eliminating the longeurs. Plus it gives you Dumai's Wells and the Cleansing as cliffhangers, which works pretty well.
The only problem is that no pay-for cable network does 20-episode seasons, but doing it on a network would mean a fairly low budget. So it's probably not practical. But it's preferable to Red Eagle's current, vastly more unrealistic plans (1 movie per book).

The Sopranos and Lost were hugely successful, and they were both six seasons long.

This could still work with a 13 episode season

Based on GoT, I'm not too sure about that.

Hmm, I think American Gods might translate well onto screen. I hadn't heard of that yet
