Dragon Star trilogy is good as well, but the ending of the first book is depressing.
*spoilers*
You aren't kidding about that. Rohan's death and Sioned's subsequent reaction is probably the saddest thing I can remember reading. Things don't exactly get better, either, what with Meiglan kicking the bucket as well. Don't get me wrong; I loved the trilogy, but it had some very unhappy parts.
I agree 100%. It ends on a bittersweet note, but things never really got cheerful again like the first trilogy. I've literally read this whole series more than two dozen times. That's no exaggeration. To this day when I do a re-read, occasionally I get so distressed/depressed by the end of Stronghold that I can't pickup the next book and finish the series, sometimes for months.
The author, Melanie Rawn, went through a long period of extreme clinical depression mid-writing-career. In fact, she's just getting her feet back under her the last few years. I've long suspected that the last three books were, at least in part, either the product of or the cause of that depression.
I need a book with a happy ending.

I seem to remember Modesitt's Towers of the Sunset had a romance element and a happy ending. *NM*
