The problem I have with Martin is that he makes promises like he was a 10 year old. He gives promises again and again that seem to have little foundation in reality, and that annoys me. If a grown man(particularly someone in GRRMs age range) tells me he will be finished with something in 6 months, I believe him. Grown ups usually makes realistic promises, because in the real world people judge you by your actions. In no other line of work can you give so many empty promises and keep your job/not go out of business. GRRM is privileged in that way, he can supposedly live without worrying about honouring his promises. It would be nice if he acted professionally though, so I could respect him as a man, and not just enjoy his work.
Amongst the more critical crowd, there are two prevailing opinions about this:
Group A wants frequent updates on when the book is coming out, how the book is going, when is it coming out, what POV characters are in it, when is it coming out, how many chapters there are and when is it coming out.
Group B doesn't really care and actually hates it when ADWD is discussed. They'd rather there was no news and no dates bandied around at all for the book until it was finished.
In order to placate Group A, the author has said in the past what he thinks is a possible timescale for the book to come out (although he has never made 'hard promises' about such a date: each date, when given, has been surrounded by caveats and maybes). This then pisses off Group B. But when the author did shut up for about a year and didn't mention the book at all, Group B was happy but Group A got incredibly irate and started trolling message boards, posting crap on his blog, harassing other fans of the series etc until they did start getting dates again. At which point Group B got annoyed again.
It's a no-win scenario.
Now I understand why everyone has been bitching about a Dance of Dragons....
