Re: Well callandor1000 Send a noteboard - 25/03/2011 05:08:25 AM
I thought we were done with these posts. They started popping up every couple of weeks and the response on grrms website seemed to put a stop to it but I guess not everybody has grown up a little.

He'll finish when he finishes and by recent reports, that will be right away. Yes, GRRM takes 4-5-6 years to complete one of his excellent books. It has always been this way and will probably continue until he finishes the series. Honestly though nobody here needs somebody else to point out or complain how long grrm takes to write a book. Everybody knows. Learn to deal with it.

im not lamenting the suddenly new fact that martin takes 6 years to finish a book, though this is the longest he has ever taken. i am lamenting the fact that he has no good excuse for this other than laziness or neglect. THAT is a justified complaint to which martin hasnt really responded. his excuses were valid for 3 years and 4 years, MAYBE even 5 years, but 6? theres no excuse, whatsoever.

it has nothing to do with growing up, it has to do with feeling like youre not being treated well, as a fan. which is something despicable when, as an author, fans are what provide you with your livelihood largely.

Dude, I'm curious. Why the hell do you think he's been lazy or neglectful? Honestly, thats the biggest piece of bullshit anyone has spitted out about him.

If you read the OP thoroughly, you'd know. But I'll say it again. He has spent 11 years on the last two books. 5 for a feast for crows and 6 for a dance with dragons. I think that its a sign of laziness that a professional author has taken 6 years (even with a full restart) to write a book. The average, AVERAGE, author writes around 2k words per day. Some, more prolific and more experienced authors write at a higher rate. So I find it inexcusable that he has taken 6 years, AND counting, to write one. He is either lazy or just neglecting his duties to the book. Either makes him unfaithful to his fans.

I read it thoroughly, but maybe I understand laziness to be, well, laziness. You talk as though he's accomplished nothing in those 11 years, except two books. It appears to me (for right or wrong) that the man always has a lot on his plate and a lot of commitments. Most of which he finishes in a very timely manner. Thats not a sign of a lazy person. Is it? Or is laziness something else... Can you see how I am lost?

Shit, who the hell is he cheating on me with? Fucking Goodkind fans? Is he really writing Terry Goodkinds books for him? I doubt this, no matter what you say, Martin doesn't put out trash such as that.

What has likely become the case (he's all but stated this outright) is that the books have become far more complicated to write than he expected. He made a mistake, lets crucify that son of a bitch. Further, he being a workaholic as he actually does appear to be, has been signing up for other commitments hoping (call me a douche bag, but I like a guy who hopes for things and tries to have faith in himself) to work on as well. It just so happens that many of those have likely been easier than untangling the mess that aSoIaF has become. I don't know about you, everyone approaches problems differently, but I'd rather knock off 3 or 4 things than 1. I mean... its just numbers. Some like to start with the tough things and deal with the others after. Glass half full or empty.

I think he deserves some credit for trying to be faithful to his story, and his work. He is clearly very meticulous about his writing. But that doesn't change the fact that he's not writing as much as he should. When push comes to shove a writers job is to write, and to write for the people who plan on reading his book. ASoIaF, as good as it is, is not an end in itself. It's not as if he's painting the sistine chapel here.

How do you know how much he's writing? Are you watching? From things implied, he's been scraping shit on a regular basis because it just doesn't work. Laziness? Doing work, having to get rid of it and do it again, I didn't think that was laziness. Maybe it is, though. Do you know?

I can think of no other reason then that he is lazy (or preoccupied with some other venture--which still makes him a dick to fans). What you want to think about that is up to you. I personally think he's a bit of a jerk, but it's his work and his prerogative. I'm just saying that this notion that he's been hard at work, carefully crafting adwd for the last six years is absurd. The book was supposed to come out SOON 2 YEARS ago, if I'm not mistaken, and that was after all this nonsense about restarting it had happened.

Ummm. He's never said thats all he's working on. As a matter of fact, its quite obvious to the casual observer that he's doing anything but that. He's not misrepresenting himself.

RJ, even at his slowest, was putting out a book every two years, maybe three. And that's around the time he was diagnosed with amyloidosis. A guy who has a serious heart disease can put out a book every three years, but martin is writing at half the pace?

Actually, if I recall, after he was diagnosed, he never put out another book again. Its been Sanderson doing it, with RJ's notes and stuff and help.

What more explanation do you need?

The fact that laziness isn't what applies here. I think Martin is a man who made a mistake, misjudged things, and has to do a shit ton or work to fix it but doesn't want to sacrifice how he operates and the overall author and professional that he is by continuing to do other projects like he has always done.
