My wife enjoys reading. Over the past couple years she has really gotten into reading novels and most of these come recommended by her sisters. I'd really like her to break into the world of science fiction fantasy, but I'm not sure where to start.
I'm trying to tread lightly and not turn her off of the entire genre, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to recommend to her?
She mainly enjoys more mainstream novels and authors:
Barbara Kingsolver
The Time-Traveller's Wife (kind of sci fi/romance) by Audrey Niffenegger
Into the Forest by Jean Hegland
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
On the flip-side, we listened to an audio version of Ender's Game a couple years ago, and she really didn't like it at all. (buggers!)
Any ideas?

I amuse myself.

American Gods is a good idea. And go to other Gaiman from there.

IMO, you can't go wrong with Neil Gaiman's works, esp his collab with Terry Pratchett: Good Omens. *NM*

How about Mists of Avalon by Zimmer?

Not so much "female" perspective as "feminist". It's a great book, but doesn't make much of men. *NM*

Then she should stay away from MZB's Darkover novels. Those became really anti-man as it progressed. *NM*

I think The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb would be a good start

I would rather recommend Hobb's second trilogy "The Liveship Traders" instead

...the second trilogy is still part of the overall story. May as well start from the beginning. *NM*

Otherland by Tad Willaims. Brilliant mix of sci-fi and fantasy, all set in near-future or alt Earth.
