The new NewScientist issue has science fiction special with flash fiction about a world a 100 years from now by eight of the best British SF writers.

There's also a competition and if you feel up to it you can get your story printed too :D.

PS. My first thread on new site :D

It was fun to read something that wasn't 500 pages. Hmmm...I should read more short stories.

Some random thoughts:

  • I don't think Ryman got the point of the exercise.

  • MacLeod's was the most clever and was remarkable for its lightheartedness compared to the others.

  • McDonald seems to envision a future where the iPhone takes over. I also got the impression that he thinks Islamic fundamentalism will dominate.

  • Griffith and Mcauly envision environmental catastrophe. Yawn. Baxter envision Universe catastrophe. That's what I'm talking about. :D

  • I think the Watson piece is the most interesting. I'd love to see it developed into a novel. How would virtual people change things?

  • What did you think?
