Another possibility is that since English is read by so many more people publishers are more willing to publish books in hardcover formatt in English. I suspect that as ebooks take off we will start seeing fewer releases of hardcover.
Hardcovers are expensive enough in English; they'd be even more expensive in languages with smaller print runs.
Indeed. Norwegian paperbacks usually cost the same as an English hardcover, and Norwegian hardcovers quickly reach £30-50
