I've read about half of Necronomicon, a rather large collection of Lovecraft's stories, and he does use that several times.
My favorite story of those I read was "At the mountains of madness", it was also the longest (over 100 pages I think).
I still intend to read the rest of the book, but it will probably take some time more before I pick it up again.

this is a collection of short stories. to be honest, they're pretty average. there are some good ones, like rats in the wall, herbert west - reanimator, cool air among them, but they're fairly samey. Plus there's too much "it was indescribably horrific, beyond the comprehension of a sane mind, no eye could behold it", i'm left thinking...just tell me what it is. the first time you try and imagine something horrific and it kind of works, but then in subsequent stories with the same device i just imagine the same thing again.
overall, i'm underwhelmed, but it's still alright for bitesize horror. starting call of cthuhlu now, i'll see if it lives up to the hype.
