I enjoyed it, but I don't think I was particularly impressed by it. I don't remember much, for starters. I remember thinking that Lavinia was a very passive character. I've never read the actual Aeneid except for excerpts in school, so I can't really comment on your worries in that respect. I can't see why you'd have anything to lose by reading it though. Might as well!
Limited reading time. And the fact that I always worry reading a bad spin-off (not sure that is the term, but I haven't had coffee yet) of something will taint the original in my mind.
