It's the sudden shift of setting and characters

In reality, the book is very, very good, but the dramatic differences between it and the previous ones make it a difficult read. The second half--and final quarter!!!--are very, very good, and make it well worth reading.
And Tehol and Bugg are definitely great.

I hope it does. I'd hate to stop reading the series because of this book. *NM*

If you stop reading the series because of that book, you won't miss much in the later ones.

Yup, it picks up the second half. I liked it myself but it did take me a while to read. *NM*
